Caterpillar for iPhone - Adds great new features to the iPhone

Catapillar is a new app from RiP Dev thats allows much needed customization and missing features. The most notably is the Calendar and Events/Todo List on the Sleep/Wake screen (the slide to unlock screen)

This is a feature that I long thought that someone would have developed an app for. Now you can quickly glance at your phone and get the date, and any events that you may have pending.

Another nice feature is the Smart Dialer, which is predictive dialing, start dialing a number or name, and the Smart Dialer will start offering you number and names from your contacts, sweeet..

Here are a fill list fo the features included with Caterpillar:
  • Smart Dialer
    Predictive Dialpad

  • µCalendar
    Calendar and Events on teh Sleep/Wake Screen

  • Privacy
    Turn SMS and other notifications off

  • Reminder
    Call and SMS audio and vibrate reminders

  • System Font
    Change the System Font

  • Facelift
    Add custom wallpapers to the springboard
These are all very useful features that this app adds to your iPhone, so whats the catch, well, there is a catch, it costs from $20-$45 USD, but is a subscription service, so its good and bad, you can test drive it for a few months, or get a lifetime subscription... you decide..

Me, I am going to take it for a test drive, I am sure a free or donation version will be around shortly, $20 USD for 6 months is kinda steep when you think Apple Supported Apps through iTunes are rumored/thought to be targeted at about $5-$10 USD each.. but more rumors again.. they may be even more.

Add http://repository.ripdev.com/ and to your Installer Sources and install Caterpillar from the category RiP Dev. - Let me know what you think and if you are willing to buy apps like this.

Apps not responding to touch after install: FIX remove Dock and or ScreenShot,, read more:
I was having some problems, seems like Dock or Screen Shot seem to interfere. here is an email i got from Salva, one of the developers, (who are really quick to respond and great sound advice, great job guys :))

"This is caused by either Dock by Nate True or Screenshot applications. To fix it, if you have access to your iPhone files via SSH or by other means, remove the appropriate .plist file from /Library/LaunchDaemons and restart your phone. :)

iPhone Software Developers Kit Delayed?

I am not going to label this as a Rumor, even though I want to, just for the selfish desire for the SDK to be released as soon as possible. Businessweek's Blog is reporting that its snoops have found out that due to last minute tweaks and decisions about what exactly to reveal with the SDK.

I am sure allot of egotistical hackers out there are thinking that Apple is trying to circumvent any possible jailbreak/activates and unlocks on its new upcoming iPhone SDK Firmware.
Even though I know there are a group of developers (ex hackers) at Apple sitting a dark room trying to block any attempt at future iphone hacks, Apple's delay wouldn't be because of us.

The logistics alone of such a launch, both on Apples internal network and buseinss channels, to its partners, developers, third party developers, lawyers and copyright departments and tying up all loose ends. Apple really cant afford for this firmware to have problems, opening up the phone to 3rd party apps can have allot of side effects on the property of Apple & At&T customers.

Thousands of crashed iPhones (or millions) could result in HUGE financial losses for both apple and AT&T if something goes wrong with any of the apps launched with the SDK and/or new firmware.

It also raises the question, will a delay in the SDK delay a new firmware? Is there even a new firmware? Will Apple release a new firmware to lock unlockers out and lay down the firmware foundation for the SDK. My thoughts are that Apple will not release a new firmware without the SDK, its just too much development needed to create the two consecutively, and one/both would already be hot on the heels of January's 1.1.3.

I think Steve is going to announce some new locations where the iPhone will be sold (Australia, Canada and maybe China), preview the SDK interface and some apps and partners, and may, just maybe, make a couple of the apps available on iTunes (for a fee and probably for free when the SDK is officially announced and a new firmware is released)

We all know that Apple launches new stuff and usually makes announcements on Tuesdays, and everyone has had their eye on Feb 26th as the launch date, will this delay be just another rumor, or Apple giving itself some room to debug the SDK and launch apps. All I got to say is that Steve better not go back on what he said.

iTunes 7.6.1 Released - Apple TV updates, no iphone problems

If you have not been prompted to update already, you will be soon (unless your auto updates are off). iTunes 7.6.1 is here, and has a loooooong list of updates and fixes for Apple TV and some other things in its change log, but nothing mentioned about iPhone or the SDK.

I have not finished downloading yet, but posts on Hackint0sh say thats its ok to upgrade iTunes on your computer, users are not reports any issues with jailbreaked/unlocked iphones.

Is this the iTunes responsible for delivery apps to the iPhone for the upcoming SDK?? What about NIkita, is she more present in iTunes this time? I am sure someone will find out very soon as hackers and snoops are checking out the new iTunes.

MobileFinder for iPhone

Now this is nothing new, I am sure allot of you seasoned iphone veterans are looking at this going wtf. But allot of the new comers to the iPhone don't really know about MobileFinder and i am sure some of you may be suprised to find out how useful it is and what a great asset it is to the iPhone. It can be found on Installer on your iPhone or you can check out the developers website :http://code.google.com/p/mobilefinder/

I use this app nearly everyday, it is my MUST HAVE APP.. It allows me to do everything from keep an important zip file or pdf on hand (well in hand) and send off whenever that pesky client calls saying they never got it, to edit my theme on the fly by changing file names and really useful things like giving files permissions and launching apps too., wheewwwww.... thats allot.. and I didnt even mention everything, here is a list of the capabilities of this great little app...

Features

Usages
Here are some screen shots for those of you who have never seen it

As a word of caution, one must realise that depending on your setting you have the potential to really screw up your iphone.. so be very careful what you are doing with Finder on the iPhone..

But with that said, I use this great app with MobileTextEdit (to edit plists), Term-vt100 and Mobile Preview, you will need BSDSubSystem to make this all work, and if you are on 1.1.3 you will need t run the follwing on your iPhone with Term-vt100 or Putty to get it all working perfect: (press return after each line)
chmod 4755 /Applications/Finder.app/Finder
chmod 4755 /bin/cat /bin/chmod /usr/bin/chown /bin/cp /bin/ls
chmod 4755 /bin/mkdir /bin/mv /bin/rm /bin/rmdir /bin/unlink
Once you have done that it should be smooth sailing, move files around. give files permissions that may haev been uploaded via iBrickr or iPhone Browser or any app that may not give the right permissions causing the app or file to crash... whatever you use it for, it is definitely useful.

[Rumor] - iPhone Update 2

HardMac.com is reporting a survey by Apple and Orange hints to the following information regarding the much anticipated firmware update/release next week Tuesday.

From HardMac: http://www.hardmac.com/news/2008-02-18/#7797

I am sending you an email to announce a survey by Apple.

A call to Orange France customer service gave some confirmations, some answers, some expected, others less so ...

-- Update 2 (this would be the correct name, not 1.1.4), will bring new features:
* Support for Flash, files with extension .Docx
* Adding a mini file manager
* Adding a "clipboard" to manage copied and pasted text, and send files to the clipboard via email or bluetooth
* iClips Management (is this the name of apps distributed via iTunes?)
* A more complete bluetooth manager
* iChat accessible only via wifi

-- But it would not bring:
* Management of MMS
* Video capture
* Editing of office files

It is almost impossible to know if this is reliable information from an employee of Orange who carried out this survey ... .
But one thing is certain, the survey was commissioned by Apple ... And the updating of firmwire will be out in a few days ...
If any of the above is true, then wow, copy and paste, flash and bluetooth file transfer are the most wanted features of the iphone, but i am sure bluetooth file transfer will have its limitations, because Apple does NOT want us sharing music, movies or podcast that we purchased with others for free.. lol..

With the upcoming event next week expect allot of rumors about the SDK and firmware.

Ziphone 2.4 - Unauthorized Bootloader Downgrades??

Why is it with every step forward this app takes a step back? According to this thread on Hackint0sh.org, users of the new Ziphone 2.4 are getting more than they signed up for when using ZiPhone. It appears that if you use the macro commands that were/are designed to make you do more with less are doing exactly that, they are downgrading your baseband when you are not asking for it.

Seems as though if you run:
ziphone -Z Y : activates/jailbreaks/unlocks AND downgrades bootloader (despite no documentation on this)
ziphone -Z N : some reports say this does in fact unlock the phone when it shouldn't.

This is the case for botht he GUI and the commands line app. (selecting the checkbox's)

Well I would be pissed if i had done that to be quite honest, because downgrading your bootloader (the process itself) comes with some risk. Once there everything should be fine (as far as we know) but if something goes wrong during the process you could very well end up with a bricked iphone. And what if i didn't want a downgraded bootlaoder??

This undoubtedly will/should be fixed and a plea should be made to Zibri to test his stuff more before releasing. I am sure he has enough followers who would donate or alpha/beta test for him.

here are the full Lsit of Commands:

ziphone -j = Jailbreak
ziphone -a = Activate
ziphone -u = Unlock (Works on both BL3.9 and BL4.6)
ziphone -e = Erase Baseband (BL 3.9 only)
ziphone -b = Downgrade Bootloader from 4.6 to 3.9, update baseband to 4.03.13 and patch the unlock.

ziphone -D: Enter DFU Mode.
ziphone -R: Enter Recovery Mode.
ziphone -N: Exit Recovery Mode (normal boot).
ziphone -C: Make coffee (checks MD5 sums on included DAT files)

I Still use ZiPhone2.0 on the mac to do most of my dirty work, it's the most stable in my opinion. iPhone.Unlock.no GUI is very well done as well, and Independence has released 1.4b with a modified Gunlock which I will be reviewing shortly.

Here are the commands issued with -Z Y and -Z N, if Zibri can make such simple mistakes (with HUGE side effects) in the code, then how will he develop the code for future firmwares/unlocks etc??

that's with -Z Y

Code:
if (Z==1) {
unlock=true;
jailbreak=true;
activate=true;
chimei=false;
ierase=false;
bl39=true;
dfu=false;
}

and that's with -Z N

Code:
else if (Z==2) {
unlock=true;
jailbreak=true;
activate=false;
chimei=false;
ierase=false;
bl39=true;
dfu=false;
}

[Rumor] - 16GB iPhone Price Drop, No more 8GB, 3G maybe mid 08?

There are some rumors going around that the price of iPhones may take another dive by mid year with the rumor/statements that a 3G iPhone will be on the way. With the way rumors are going these days, I don't know what to believe as far as the price drops and the elimination of the 8GB iPhone from the lineup.

Now we all remember what happened last year when they announced the $200 price cut and drop of the 4GB line, early adopters were upset, and Steve Jobs/Apple had to issue a Letter on Apples website stating that a all early adopter would receive a $100 voucher from Apple.. what will it be this time? - a hard luck?

And the burning questions is, 'Will the new 3G iPhone be offered Unlocked?' - I don't think so, with an official statement from AT&T on the matter, I wouldn't hold my breath. But we can all hope.

Hello and Welcome to all the readers around the world!

I would just like to say thank you to all the readers and visitors from over 140 countries around the world over the last few months. I would have never have thought that my little blog would get so much attention.

When I started it in September, it was really to help me with the people I unlocked phones for and my friends that wanted to know how to do the cool stuff I was doing on my iPhone. From there it has grown into my, and apparently some of your resource for info, links, files, tutorials, references, rumors and remedies.

Lat month I signed up for Google Analytics to see where my readers where coming from and to my absolute AMAZEMENT I was getting hits from around the world, OMG.

It also gave me some interesting numbers about iPhone users in Trinidad & Tobago. I got about 650 hits from Trinbagonians in the last month.

So quite humbly, I would like to say thank you for reading, and visiting.

I run this blog by myself (with occasional inspiration from my pup Layla) from my home office, between my full time job of designing websites and user interfaces, and my part time, selling iPods and my growing side business/hobby of fixing/repairing/unlocking and blogging everything iPhone.

Fix the Problems with 1.1.3 after Ziphone and Dev Soft-Update

Numerous problems are have surfaced with the update to 1.1.3, most of them are because of Applications now being run as "mobile" and not as "root" as it was before on 1.1.2 and below. This means that most old apps are not working or saving files to the correct place, it also means that allot of folders don't have the right permissions to grant some applications full system file access.

Here are a collection of commands that you can run either from term-vt100 on the iphone (found on installer) or from putty over SSH, each line, press return after:

  • Most applications you download will save to one of these folders, give them full permissions by issueing the following commnads
chmod 777 /var/root/Library
chmod 777 /var/root/Library/Preferences
chown -R mobile:mobile /var/mobile
  • Get Installer working type the following:
chmod 4755 /Applications/Installer.app/Installer
  • Ste (admin of Istaller app) has moved the repository from one site to another. So, you're getting the package download failure notices because most of the files simply AREN'T THERE anymore.
The only thing to do is to change the URL of "Ste Packaging" to http://repo.smxy.org/iphone-apps/ in the Sources section of Installer app.
  • If you have not gotten Term-VT100 to work on the iphone and you are using Putty, issue these commands:
chmod 4755 /usr/bin/login
mkdir -p /usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/lib
ln -s /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib /usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/lib/
your username will be root and password alpine
  • Get Mobile Finder Working (allowing you to navigate your file system, copy and past files, launch apps, give files permissions and much more)
chmod 4755 /Applications/Finder.app/Finder
chmod 4755 /bin/cat /bin/chmod /bin/chown /bin/cp /bin/ls
chmod 4755 /bin/mkdir /bin/mv /bin/rm /bin/rmdir /bin/unlink

  • Fix Email - Passwords not saving, mail app crashing (Sync Fix should fix this also - see above)
Add http://sleepers.net/iphonerepo as an Installer source. Select the Category Tweaks (1.1.3). Then install Package 1.1.3 Mailfix.

A Big Fat Lie - FAKE! - Tiny-Code.com & Apple SDK for 1.1.4a

"Hey Guys,
It's finally time I just come out and say it; I lied.

Tiny-Code never had any relations with Apple, Inc. or any other division of Apple. Never had the new firmware or any pre-SDK pack. Certainly never signed any NDA.

I find it interesting that a simple joke on the front of a minor at best Installer.app repo can cause so many wakes.
It is equivocally funny that a simple re-enforcement of the page by me posted earlier stating I had been "reprimanded" by Apple could throw it even more into believability.
To top it all off, a simple redirection of the domain to Apple's iPhone Developer center would cause so many theories as to why that is so when it was to just stop the "where did it go" questions.

All of it should teach everyone at these rumor sites WWWide to not trust anything that did NOT come from the mouth of Apple.
8 lines of text were published on Friday, by Sunday those lines of text are one of the biggest talked about and debated lines of text across Apple related internet sites.

This goes to prove anyone can register a domain one week and less than two later be believed, talked about, debated over, defended, ratted on, bashed, requested to be interviewed on DowJones Newswire and everything else under the sun. The power of the internet is amazing.

I do however wish to make a few apologies because I never actually planned for anyone to give a flying **** about my page or what was on it, let alone make it so popular.

To Apple, Incorporated:
I duly apologize for any confusion I may have caused amongst your ranks attempting to figure out if Tiny-Code or KellyTM belonged to any of the developers you did in fact release firmware to.
I duly apologize for time wasted if anyone at Apple was called in to discuss what was released over a weekend when you should have been off.

To Developers out there:

I apologize for possibly making obtaining pre-release firmware harder to obtain in the future and possibly discrediting any of you in the process.

To MacRumors and other websites publishing information and threads based on what was found on my site:
I apologize you have wasted your time and front-page space on nothing but a made up joke filled with a lie.
I apologize for the time you spent creating your reports and articles and time you will spend writing an article about this.

To Everyone who defended me:

Thank you for your defense and had this not been a lie, you would have been defending someone and that is a good thing, be proud.
I apologize it wasn't truth.

To everyone who bashed me:

well, lol, I can't really apologize to you.

As for the up-side of this:
Rumor sites such as this, Apple Insider, etc, you will have to learn, things like this happen, and you should verify or attempt to credit things said on domains with no more than two pages.

Overall I just apologize. I do not expect forgiveness and I definitely understand the posts following this to be nothing more than bashing. Just know than when I posted that information I had no intention for attention or otherwise, it was simply an excuse to stop publishing to the repo; seemed like a good one at the time.

Sincerest Apologies,
KellyTM/Tiny-Code Developer"
Source:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4989694&postcount=274

What a waste of time, I have since removed one of the previous article from the live blog, just because of the amount of confusion surrounding the entire story, but it does go to show remind me to put RUMOR infront of these kind of stories.

I don't agree with these stunts, and I see it hurting the community more than anything, with Apple tightening its security and scrutiny of developers that get the Apple SDK for the iPhone.

It also brings a sort of distrust and a bad tasting mouth... with a cynical grin at the end.

Is NIkita on the iPhone? - Install/Uninstall Apps

What is Nikita? And what is she doing on my iPhone?

Well incase you didnt know, Nikita is the app responsible for signing Apps developed with the iPhone SDK and downloaded via itunes. If you look at usr/libexec on your iphone you will see two files nikita_installer and nikita_uninstaller.

There were rumors that Nate Tru's Soft-Update to 1.1.3 breaks this function, cause it didn't update the kernel cache, and users will still be using 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 kernel caches that dont work with Nikita. What does this mean? Well those of you still Soft-Updated need to do the full proper update or wait for a patch IF one is needed.

But from the looks of things to come, 1.1.4 will be released with the SDK so we all may need to update and re-jailbreak/activate and unlock our phones again soon..

What we know

  • "Nikita" is responsible for receiving, unarchiving and decrypting the application packages on the iPhone/iPod end.
  • Onboard the iPhone/iPod, two versions of Nikita lives in /usr/libexec: nikita_installer and nikita_uninstaller.
  • The service is called com.apple.mobile.nikita.
  • Nikita is already defined as part of iTunes' secure MZFinance web objects.
So does this mean no more installer, or is installer going to be able to use Nikita or have a script/app for unachiving/installing/uninstalling apps signed and usually delivered by iTunes? I have no idea (well some hints) but we will have to wait and see.

[Rumor] - 1.1.4 Alpha? 3rd Party App Dev speaks

Tiny-Code, who i reported yesterday was no longer going to be supporting 1.0.0-1.1.3 apps for the iphone and its repo on Installer, has made an official comment about 1.1.4 alpha and the SDK offeret o 3rd party dev's like himself.

One: Yes, I have a copy of the Apple SDK for the iPhone targeting firmware 1.1.4.

Two: Yes, Tiny-Code.com was ordered to be removed from operation by Apple, Inc because by releasing firmware versions and stating I had possession of the firmware and SDK was apparently a violation of the Non-Disclosure Agreement I agreed to when I accepted a copy of the SDK and firmware.

Three: Yes I was wrist-slapped by Apple and won't be included in any further firmware beta's or testing/coding.

And finally, Four: No I cannot disclose any more about anything without getting into more trouble, stating the above is ok because well let's face it, there is documented proof I already have and Apple already backhanded me for it.

I don't have a date for when the SDK should be available, even if I did, I couldn't say more than I have.

Sorry for the confusion and sorry I can't update my repo anymore, at least not until the new firmware is out.

PS: The link to apple dev center, that is just to stop the "where did it go" questions. Apple didn't ask me to, I just did.
Regards,
Kelly

source: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4980184&postcount=169
Now, if i were him, i would be keeping my tail shut and brown-nosing who i can to ensure my relationship with Apple doesn't go sour, but seems like he cant get in any more trouble than he already has (well if he leaked the 1.1.4 firmware and iPhone SDK he would violate his Non Disclosure and get sued lol).

I guess this does mean a new 1.1.4 firmware is just arund the corner and all the unlocks/tools what we have now 'may' need to be reinvented or patched, and who know what will happen from there.

ShowTime Video Recorder for the iPhone - Now saves as .mov

Video recording on the iPhone is getting closer to a reality with ShowTime from PoloarBearFarms.com. Version 1.11b saves the video clips as .mov files, and HUGE ones at that, and not the best color, the frame rate is not that great but the resolution is pretty good.

Get it by adding http://www.polarbearfarms.com/repo/ to your intaller sources.

I made a short 13 second clip and it was 43MB - WOW and it was blue! not the best but definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully with the SDK we will see allot of needed improvement to this app or a while new one that will offer full video recording capabilities with better control and quality.

But for now we have ShowTime from Polor Bear Farms..

Ziphone 2.4 - Everything at your fingertips.

Zibri has been busy over the weekend, bug fixing, adding new features and revamping his ziphone application that does everything form activate to unlock your iphone. Some of the new features are all in one commands that compile a few command into one action.

Ziphone 2.4 Features:

The two all-in one modes are:
ziphone -Z Y
Jailbreak, activate, and unlock any version

ziphone -Z N
Jailbreak and activate, but don't unlock

To see the advanced commands (same as in older versions), run:
ziphone -Z A

For customers of official iPhone cell carriers, it may be preferable to run:
ziphone -j
Just jailbreak, don't touch activation tokens or unlock. You still still need
to connect the phone to iTunes to activate.

ziphone -j -u
Jailbreak and also unlock any version.

Ziphone can place your device into recovery or DFU mode to help in downgrading or restoring
firmware through iTunes. To enter DFU mode, run:
ziphone -D

downgrade your baseband bootloader with -b.
