Sigh - Ziphone 3.0 - use if you wish, problems found as usual

It's no secret that recently I am not a big fan of Zibri's work, attitude or thirst for money recently, and now his "naughty sponsors". I know and respect that he has helped allot, and even myself have used his older utilities Ziphone 1.0 and 2.0 on a few phones, but even so, I had my problems with it (from no sound issues, to messed up wifi, and the bootloader downgrade to 3.9 origianl and NOT 3.9 Fake Blank). I also never trusted 2.x-3.0 versions because of the constant patches and fixes that were released subsequently and again the bootloader issue. With the release of iPlus and iLiberty, I personally have no use for ZiPhone or desire to try it out or to see what surprises are waiting. Hey Zibri, Apple checks the BL's now, it would be a good idea not to use the 3.9 original!

The recent incarnation of ZiPhone is version 3.0, and as usual, it uses a mixed-match of apps and code stolen and borrowed from other developers (with no credit, thanks or mention), and the part that I and many others have a BIG problem with is his new Egotistical Wifi Patch.

So, if by any chance two poor souls who used this fix are in the same network...well you must know what happens.

This isn't a fix by all means.
Now I know the Zifan-boys are going to flame me for calling it Egotistical, but it is, 00:5a:49:42:52:49 spells ZIBRI in ascii - what the firetruck!!! - and thats not the real part that is the problem (even though it starts to make you really think - What is he really doing? Trying to become synonymous with iPhones? or really try to fix and help people?)

The real problem with his Wifi 'patch' is that is uses a fixed Mac Address on every phone it patches, so if you unlock couple dozen phones (or hundreds if you are a commercial unlocker) it means that only one phone will be allowed onto a wifi network if they are all trying to get online. ok, some people may say thats nothing, well it is when you are for example in an airport trying to get online, and there maybe 10, 20, 100 other iPhone all with the same mac address trying to get online, and viola, none or one of them are successful. What if everyone using 3.0 uses this feature unknowingly, is there any way to fix it?

What is also bugging me and others is his BLATANT lack of giving thanks where and when its needed, and the copy cat style that he employs. This Wifi 'patch' is not even his, , it's cmw aka Niacin's code being used without even crediting him.

Problem is that allot of new iPhone owners will try ZiPhone 3.0 and unknowingly check all the boxes (and as a noob, wanting to make sure Wifi is working, they will check that box) so it means allot of phones with this problem of having the same mac address..

Who knows what other bugs will be found, and I would advice that you use this at your own risk. There are better, easier, and more supported methods out there - good luck.

@Bezman,

Best post ever explaining the conflict between the community and Zibri, or Zibri and the community. It's all relative. You bothered to take a few mins and explain what no one else has bothered to do. This is appreciated (at least by me) and naturally gives a complete view.

My question is: why don't ALL sides get together and work it out as a complete team? If Apple drops in some serious and I mean serious military grade security (can you say NSA level stuff), no one and I mean no one will be able to hack it. Game over man. Game over.

As an aside, I have dealt with Zibri regarding his app and he seems ok. I am sure the Dev Team guys are equally ok and equally egotistical. Why not take this talent and us it to fight the enemy (not really Apple) the operators that want to lock people into these stupid contracts?

Anyway, just my thoughts on the matter.

well, zibri actually was part of the elite/dev team, and fell out with them (cause he wanted to expose and show off everything they were holding back for security and refinement), hacked their AnySim, then came 1.2.p or whatever and 1.3 leaked/published with no credits to the dev team, formed his own elite dev team or whatever, then bumped everyone off the wiki, ran off with a bunch of code and secrets and exposed them, then it was jsut zizi - zizi said he left cause the devs wanted money for JerrySim (huge lie and misinterpretation of the internal dev memo), he then started the ziphone and the rest and unfolded before your eyes.

new comers don't realize and just think everyone is just hating on his success... Ziphone would be allot different if there was credit given where credit is due.

Hello Bezman,

Now a question for all of us that have used ZiPhone.

Scneario: iPhone unlocked and jailbroken with ZiPhone. BL now downgraded to 3.9 from 4.6. Will using Pwnage (etc...) return the BL back to 4.6, and what would be the best way to go about this?

Would doing a restore via iTunes to 1.1.4 then using the other tools be the best bet or are we who used ZiPhone now stuck with what was done?

Thanks.

PWNED can certianly return a out the box 4.6BL iphone that was downgraded to 3.9 original with ziphone

but there is no real reason to, unless you need to restore to factory (to return to apple) or wish to use a custom firmware from PWNED to restore or unlock your iPhone.

i always say, if it aint broke, dont try to fix it, if your phone is working perfectly, count yourself lucky and enjoy it.

if you are having wifi or service issues, you may want to restore or even virginize your baseband, and run iLiberty+ or even PWNED to restore your bootloader, and unlock

Thanks for the quick reply.

My phone works fine. I used ZiPhone 2.6 on it when the 16 gig first came out. In fact, I downloaded 2.6 about 8 minutes after it came out and hit the "Do it all" button. I think 2.6 is probably better then the 3.0 version. I also agree that the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra.

By the way, I added your site to my iPhone bookmarks. Good source of info.

By the way, I am on a Mac, not sure if iLiberty+ works on that.

Hi there,
I've got one last quetion in a metter I don't quite understand.

You said using the Ziphone-Tool will reset the Mac-Adress of my Iphone to this static adress that Zibri uses.
Unfortunatly I and a friend of mine used that tool and we experienced the problem that we can't lock on to the same WiFi anymore.
I would like to if a restore of the Iphone via Itunes would also restore the old mac adress?
Is there any way to get my or our Iphones completly resored(including the Mac-Adress-Issue?
Please help me / us ;-)
