MagicSims / SonicSim - unlocking 1.1.2 out the box with a little magic

It seems the only way to unlock a 1.1.2 Out of the Box iPhone is to use some sort of Sim Adapter to trick the iPhone into thinking its working perfectly on AT&T's network. They all use the same ICCID and IMSI from the AT&T card that you get with the iPhone when you buy it, and require that data to be prgrammed into the new Sim that will accompany your current Sim to work with your shiney new iPhone.

Magic Sims are the latest unlock method and by far seems to be the cheapest. I have ordered myself a MagicSim and a USB SimCard Reader/Writer off ebay, and have gotten notice that payment was received and they are being shipped from HongKong today Monday 10th, and will hopefully reach late the week or early next week.

The trick to the magic Sim was discovered by Dark(DarKSideZ), mxweas and PsxGunDown and fellow Trinidadian "g" on IRC chat as they were trying to figure out what made StealthSims work and if they could replicate it.

here are the instructions and things needed:

Items Needed:

  • Magic SIM’s Dual SIM Card (Must be a Magic SIM, others will not work) - MagicSIM, eBay
  • Serial SIM Card Reader & Writer
  • Magic SIM’s SIM Editing Software - Download

Put your AT&T SIM into your SIM writer, and open SIM Scanner and scan your AT&T SIM card. Write down the ICCID as we will need this later. Next open Woron Scan and get your IMSI. Now put in your Magic SIM Dual SIM Card and open SIM Data. Put in your AT&T IMSI and ICCID into and transfer it back to your Dual SIM. Using the paper guide from your Dual SIM, cut your provider’s SIM card accordingly. You should now be able to put your provider’s SIM card into the Dual SIM and then into your iPhone . If this works for anyone or you know of ways to improve these steps, post a reply in the comments of this post.

The above is taken directly from MxWeas blog, and is the same procedure that i plan to follow. As soon as I get the MagicSim and sim card reader/writer I will post more info, I am even thinking of going to the various cell shops tomorrow and seeing if they have anything like this so I can give it a try without waiting on the items off Ebay (cant believe I didn't think of that today)

There is currently a topic on hackint0sh about it where it is confirmed working by bigbuckz, who was able to get the Sim and a SimCard Writer/Reader at a local Cell shop and programmed the MagicSim to work. This is what I should have done today :)

more to come soon:

after some running around i found this today at local cell stores and friend who also fiddles with iphones.

Hi,
I got an unlocked iphone/sinicSIM working with the sim card belonging to the man who sold me the thing. he phoned me and i saw it. then he took his sim card out. i went home, cut my own simcard, inserted it into the sonicsim, than into the iphone, and.. nothing. still "no sim" message. i am sure i cut it exactly right. what could be the reason? any ideas?
